Dorothy Irons

–

Ankeny, Iowa

Dorothy Lucille Irons, 93, of Mill Pond Senior Living, Ankeny, lowa, passed away peacefully with family at her side on June 4, 2026.

She was born March 28, 1933, in Vandalia, lowa, a child of Ray and Mary Wolver. She was a member of The Carbondale Evangelical/Pleasant Hill Free Church.
Dorothy graduated from Altoona High School and immediately began working at Northwestern Bell. On August 10, 1956, she married Charlie Gerald Irons of Runnells, Iowa. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary prior to his passing on April 8, 2022. At the birth of their first child in 1963 she left her NW Bell job to become a "stay-at-home" mom.

Having another child in 1964, Dorothy was very busy. She was a typical farmer's wife, working beside her husband. When her children started school, she was a willing volunteer, as well as, being supportive of their activities as they advanced grades. A few of her hobbies were: gardening, baking, cooking and quilting, excelling at all. Spending time with her children/grandchildren/great-grandchildren was a high priority for her. She enjoyed gathering with family or friends to play cards and relished the laughter that always ensued. Attending and dancing at the music jams, making special outfits for holidays, gave her much joy. She was a good friend to many, happy to lighten their load if possible.

She is survived by son, David (Patty) Irons; daughter, Diane Liggett; four grandchildren, Ben (Chelsea) Liggett, Andrew (Amber) Liggett, Lisa Irons, and Mary Irons; five great-grandchildren, Witten, Saylor, Willow, Sutton, and Asher Liggett, plus two more expected; sister, Luella Garrett; many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her spouse, Charlie; parents, Ray and Mary; in-laws, Lester and Gladys; siblings, Frances Taylor, Dale Wolver, Elizabeth Parker and Raymond Wolver; brothers-in-law, Gene Taylor and Herman Irons; sisters-in-law, Nancy Irons and Judy Wolver.

Dorothy will be fondly remembered as a caring mom, grandma, sister, aunt and friend to all.

The body was accepted by Des Moines University Medical and Health Sciences for medical education and research. Her body will be cremated and laid to rest in Vandalia Cemetery at a later date. No formal service will be held.
