William "Bill" Richards of Des Moines passed away on January 21, 2014 in Phoenix, Arizona. Bill was born in Hartford, Iowa on December 14, 1927 to James R. Richards of rural Hartford and Ermile Esta Maude James of Palmyra, Iowa. He was the youngest of five children. He joined the Navy on December 11, 1945 and received an honorable discharge in 1947. He was married to Wanda Beth Park of Runnells, Iowa on March 20, 1949 until her death in 1997. He was a federal employee, working as a microbiologist for the National Animal Disease Laboratory in Ames, Iowa. The day after his retirement, Bill founded his own business, Allied Laboratories, providing identification of and research toward the treatment of Johne's disease in cattle. Following a heart attack in 1997, Bill received the gift of a heart transplant that afforded him 16 more years of life. On December 13, 2002 he married his childhood friend and classmate Vannie Kathleen Black and lived in Des Moines near where they grew up. Bill is survived by his loving family, including his wife Kathleen, daughter Hope McEvoy (Greg), son Duane Richards (Ann), five grandchildren, sister-in-law, nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, young daughter Diane, wife Wanda, and siblings Max Richards, CJ "Skinny" Richards, Ivan Richards and Maxine Pendry. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm on February 8th at the Community United Presbyterian Church in Hartford. Visitation with family present will be one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.
