John C. Byrd , of Indianola died Monday October 22, 2012 at the Indianola Good Samaritan. John had been a member of the Masons, Cantons, Encampment, Odd Fellows, Rebekahs and American Legion for many years. At the time of his death he was a member of the Odd Fellows, Rebekahs and the American Legion. He was grand Patriarch of the Grand Encampment of Iowa,1998-1999 and was Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Iowa, 1992-1993. John had the honor of laying the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in May of 1999. He instituted the Jr. Odd Fellows Lodge in Indianola for the youth of the area. As a U.S. Army veteran he served during WWII. He went on an honor flight August 2010. He also enjoyed going to the elementary schools and talking to the kids on Veterans Day. John was a very hard working carpenter. He traveled all over the United States building various buildings. Playing cribbage, working in the shed making stools and fishing were favorite pastimes.\nHe was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Bob; sister Mary Ann and wife Marilyn.\nJohn is survived by his children, Ed (Robin), Jo (Scott), Mary (Jerry), John Jr. (Peggy); twelve grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; several adopted grandchildren and lots of other nieces, nephews and friends.\nMemorial Fraternal Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 27, 2012 at the Odd Fellows Hall near the cemetery on South Jefferson. Military honors by American Legion Post # 165 and V.F.W. # 4123 will follow directly at the I.O.O.F. Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Any Memorials will go to the Arthritis Fund thru Odd Fellows of Iowa.
