L. Cornell Obituary (1926 - 2013)

Virginia (Hutchcroft) Cornell, 87, went home to the Lord on Saturday, November 16, 2013, from her country home in rural Ackworth, Iowa. Virginia was born on August 28, 1926 near the rural Pleasant Hill Community in southwest Warren County, Iowa. She was the third child of Fred and Cena Hutchcroft. Virginia was raised on the farm in southwest Warren County and graduated from Indianola High School in 1944. She worked for the Indianola Telephone Company as a switchboard operator, beginning while she was in high school and continuing following her graduation. In 1946, she married Lavere Cornell upon his return from Naval Service during WWII. To this union two children were born, Teresa and Steven. Virginia was very grateful to raise her family on the farm and work every day beside her husband. She helped with the hog operation as well as the field work and any other job that needed to be done on the farm. After Lavere's death in 1994 she continued to work on the farm with her son, Steve and grandson, Chris. Virginia was a member of the First Baptist Church in Indianola for more than 60 years. She served as a women's circle leader and a Deaconess. Virginia enjoyed life; she loved to laugh, she loved playing cards with all of her special friends over the years, she loved to travel and attend sporting events, she held family and friends near and dear. Virginia is survived by her two children, Teresa Doonan, of Johnston, Iowa and Steven (Sharon) Cornell of rural Ackworth, Iowa. Also surviving are four grandchildren and two step grandchildren: Scott (Renee) Doonan of Eagle River, Alaska, Angela (Brian) Gabel of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Christopher Cornell of rural Ackworth, Iowa, Kimberly (Jeremy) Kruse of Indianola, Iowa, Christopher Jones of New Braunfels, Texas and Jennifer Jones of New Braunfels, Texas. She is also survived by eight great grandchildren: Brooke and Alex Doonan, Jaycie and Claire Gabel, Brianne and Bryce Cornell, and Claire and Kaylyn Kruse. In addition, she is survived by her brother, Frederick Hutchcroft, Jr. and her sister-in-law, Ruth Cornell, both of Indianola. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, Fred and Cena Hutchcroft, her husband, Lavere Cornell, and recently her brother, Robert Hutchcroft. Services will be held honoring Virginia at Peterson's Funeral Home in Indianola, Iowa on Thursday, November 21, 2013. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. with services following at 11 a.m. She will be interred at the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery next to the love of her life, Lavere. Memorrials will go to Mercy Hospice.
