Ann Baughman

Surrounded by family, Velma Baughman, 96, died peacefully at her home in Indianola, Iowa, on May 17, 2012. Born in Russell, Iowa, on April 12, 1916, she was the daughter of Thomas Claude and Myrtle Rebecca Storm Chapman. She graduated in 1933 from Russell High School, Russell, Iowa, where she participated in classroom activities and appeared in school plays.

Velma married Cleo A. Baughman of Russell on May 12, 1934, in Princeton, Missouri. They had four children, three daughters and one son, whom they raised in Indianola. Velma was devoted to her family, including her six grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and eight great great grandchildren. A member of the First Baptist Church in Indianola, she was active in Sunday School and held offices in both ABWM and the Ann Judson Circle. For fifteen years she was a cook in Indianola elementary schools. Known for her energy and good humor, Velma particularly enjoyed playing alto horn in high-school and community bands and playing cards with her family and closest friends.

Velma is survived by two daughters, Kay (Veryl) Wickett and Nancy Baughman, both of Indianola; by her daughter-in-law, Judy Baughman, of Elgin, South Carolina; by her sister-in-law, Daisy Chapman, of Russell; by two nephews and one niece; and by her twenty-eight grand-, great-grand-, and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her mother-in-law, Lorena Baughman; her brothers, Homer and Harold Chapman; her daughter Sandra Baughman Gay; and her son, Ronald Baughman.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, May 21, at Peterson Funeral Home, Indianola. A funeral service will be held at Peterson's, 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 22, with interment to follow at the I.O.O.F. cemetery, Indianola. The family wishes to thank the staffs of HCI of Central Iowa Hospice and of Circle of Friends for the loving care they provided to Velma during her final months.
