Raymond D. Kain Obituary (1933 - 2016)

Raymond D. Kain, 82, of Carlisle passed away Thursday, March 17, 2016 at The Village in Indianola. The family will greet friends from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on Sunday, March 20th at Peterson Funeral Home in Carlisle. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, March 21st at the Carlisle Christian Church, 305 Market Street, Carlisle. Interment will follow at the Carlisle Cemetery. Ray was born September 21, 1933 in Swan, Iowa. He was a graduate of Pleasantville High School. After graduating he worked for Bishop Manufacturing Company and James Oil Company. The service station served as the perfect, romantic proposal site for his young bride to be, Gloria Miller, and they were married May 14, 1955. His career as "Ray's Shell Service" began in the fall of 1955. After 6 years as a "Shell" man, Ray started a new chapter as the "Skelly" man in a new location on Highway 5. Through the years, his business became Getty and finally Texaco, always offering "full service" to his customers. He also spent many days and nights inside a tow truck or plowing snow for his customers. In 1988, Ray transitioned from a full service gas station to Ray's Auto Shop, wrecker service and used cars until his retirement in 1995. Ray was an active volunteer in Carlisle Little League for years while his son, Randy was playing baseball. Through the years he enjoyed boating and camping with family and friends and perhaps most exciting was acquiring his private pilot's license in 1978. He shared this interest with his brother Marvin, cousin Ben and uncle, Whitey, all licensed pilots. Ray also spent many nights as a chauffeur for Wildcat fans transporting parents, cheerleaders and basketball players in his big, green motorhome. That motorhome also served as a moving van many times back and forth to college dormitories. Ray also was a faithful follower of the Carlisle Wildcats and enjoyed watching his grandchildren as they were involved in sports, cheerleading and music activities at Carlisle Community Schools. Ray is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Gloria, daughter Kayla and husband, Craig Price, son Randy Kain and wife Debbie, granddaughter, Tara and husband Chris Winter, grandsons, Tyson Price, Jared Kain, Brad Kain and great grandchildren Emmry and Maddox Winter. He is also survived by sisters, Louise Brown of Knoxville, Deanna Schutz of Winterset and brother, Larry Kain and wife Florence of Kansas City, Missouri; sister in law, Frances Kain of Knoxville, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Clara Kain and brother, Marvin Kain. Memorial gifts may be directed to Gloria Kain, PO Box 196, Carlisle, Iowa 50047. In honor of Ray's memory, the family would like to recognize the compassionate care provided by the staff of The Village in Indianola and the Carlisle Christian Church. During a discussion about the celebration of her great grandpa's life, great granddaughter, Emmry stated, " Lots of people are going to be there because he has a lot of friends." Early in his youth, Ray was known as "Irish" by family and friends. To quote Ray's brother, Larry, "I think God called "Irish" home so he could lead the St. Patrick's Day celebration in heaven."
